The most basic level of cooperation is called an “interline agreement”. This generally enables airline IT systems to communicate so that baggage can be automatically transferred between flights without the passenger’s involvement. Sometimes interlining means when you check in for multiple flights, the airline providing the initial check-in can give you a boarding pass for all of your flights (“sectors”). Interline agreements might allow a top-level frequent flyer at one airline to use the lounge facilities of another airline too.
